rtpmidid allows you to share ALSA sequencer devices on the network using RTP MIDI

Updated: 11 Jul, 2020

rtpmidid is a Linux daemon that bridges between the ALSA sequencer and another RTP MIDI compatible network connected system. This allows to use MIDI over Ethernet for Linux systems.

This new version features compatibility with Apple systems (iOS and MacOS), enhances compatibility with rtpmidi for Windows, and debuts the librtpmidid library.

rtpmidid 20.07 comes with these new features:

  • Compatibility with Apple RTP MIDI implementation: Mac OS and iOS.
  • Improved stability.
  • Basic CLI interface. Uses a Unix socket and JSON so other frontends could exist.
  • Separate, LGPL2.1 library for the rtpmidi protocol.

In this version the librtpmidid library is introduced. The library is licensed with LGPL 2.1, with the idea of encouraging third parties to include rtpmidi support in their products. It is very sad that there are a lot of hardware devices with networking support, WiFI or Ethernet, but they opt for private interfaces that are buggy and difficult to interconnect to. I'm looking at you AKAI MPC One (literally, it's here on my desktop) and your AKAI Network Driver. If you were compatible with rtpmidi you would just work on Apple Devices, and with a third party installation on Windows and Linux. And MPC could use your massive MIDI

DiscoDOS helps a DJ remember and analyze what they played in their sets, or what they could possibly play in the future

Updated: 30 Jun, 2020

This release is all about making installation and configuration as native as possible on Windows and macOS.

  • Windows: Download installer - run - use Start Menu entries to launch DiscoDOS and view Documentation.
  • macOS: Download .dmg file - doubleclick - Drag and drop DiscoDOS.app to Applications - doubleclick to launch

Release Notes:

  • No separate installation program needed anymore: Just: Install - Run - Essential configuration steps run automatically
  • The token necessary to access the user's Discogs collection is now asked by disco interactively. No need to edit a configuration file anymore.
  • DiscoDOS' files are kept in a place fitting well with what a Windows/macOS user would expect (Home folder - Documents - DiscoDOS).

Builds:

  • Windows package was built on a Windows 10 machine (should be compatible with lower Windows versions too)
  • macOS package was built on a macOS High Sierra 10.13. machine (is not compatible with lower macOS versions - in case you are running an older macOS, please reach out to me (open an issue). I will try to find a way to package on an older machine)

Updated: 29 Jun, 2020

This second release candidate was primarily created for packaging DiscoDOS into Debian Linux. It turned out that some of those changes appear useful in Windows and macOS packages as well.

This is a source only release though - for Windows and macOS packages please get rc3 above.

This release (v1.0_rc2) will, if all goes well, be available in Debian GNU/Linux unstable distribution and be installable simply doing apt install discodos. Debian is the basis for a lot of other distros too and hopefully DiscoDOS will make it in those soon. My hopes are up for Ubuntu's October release (20.10) and thus its "childs" Linux Mint, Ubuntu Studio, etc..

Release notes:

  • The separate DiscoDOS setup program vanished, which simplifies installation:
    • All necessary setup-steps run automatically when disco command is launched the first time (download - unzip - run - done)
    • All the setup program functionality was moved to a subcommand of disco, which, if necessary, can still be launched by the user "on demand" (run "disco setup")
  • Loads of documentation was added/updated/improved (README.md, MANUAL.md, INSTALLATION.md, CONTRIBUTION.md)
  • disco mix command:
    • Fix use mix-names multiple times
  • discosync command:
    • Fix ordering of available backups in restore and show commands
  • Changes under the hood

OpenMPT is a popular tracker software for Windows

Updated: 13 Apr, 2020

Yep, OpenMPT 1.29 also didn't quite make it for Easter - some major features have been worked on in the previous months (improved MED and SFZ support among others), so we would like to give the release a bit more time and ensure it has the usual quality. However, some of the changes that have been done since Christmas have now been wrapped up in an OpenMPT 1.28 update:

  • When changing from modern tempo mode to classic or alternative tempo mode, the initial song tempo is now retained better.
  • Do not modify existing Parameter Control Events incorrectly when interpolating normal (volume) commands or notes.
  • Volume column tone portamento commands did not update portamento effect memory when seeking. XM volume column portamento quirks are now handled better when seeking.
  • When OPL instruments were set up as external samples, changing their parameters didn't mark them as modified.
  • IT: Vibrato was too fast in Old Effects mode since OpenMPT 1.27.
  • DMF: Some files had a wrong tempo since OpenMPT 1.25.02.00.
  • Fixed potential crash when trying to save a file to a drive that no longer exists.

rtpmidid allows you to share ALSA sequencer devices on the network using RTP MIDI

Updated: 05 Apr, 2020
Initial rtpmidid release. 20.04 #stayathome

https://github.com/davidmoreno/rtpmidid/

Features:

  • Basic RTP MIDI protocol implementation for Linux
  • Use of UDP/IP to communicate MIDI devices
  • Most common MIDI messages: Notes, CC, Pitch Bend...
  • Interoperable with Windows, Mac OS*, iPad, Android and Hardware Devices. And with other rtpmidid instances.
  • Uses ALSA sequencer interface (tip: qjackctl is great for managing connections)
  • Use mDNS for easy discovery of other ends
  • This release includes packages for Ubuntu and Raspbian.
  • GPLv3 License

(*) Not tested as I don't have access to Hardware. But if it works on iPad it should work on Mac OS.

This marks the first rtpmidi release, the #stayathome edition.

Beta version

It has minimal features and can be used on experimental setups to use rtpmidi. It has been tested with iPads, Android (TouchDAW), rtpmidi for Windows, and Deepmind12 for hardware.

It has no support for the journal, so in theory some MIDI packets might be lost, which can be a problem. The introspection capabilities are also very limited, just now only on the logging data and a bit via the rtpmidid-cli.

noisicaä is an open source DAW for GNU/Linux, inspired by modular synths.

Updated: 13 Mar, 2020

Today's commit is just an assorted set of bug fixes and minor improvements.

What's new

Append Measures

A new dialog to append measures to measured tracks (i.e. Score and Beat Tracks). Either a given number or filling the track till the end of the project.

Improved Audio Settings

Now the engine state and load is displayed in the audio settings dialog.

Random Changes

  • Renaming a node is triggered from the context menu. It was previously supposed to work by double clicking on the node name itself, but that was very flaky and often did not work.
  • After a crash, noisicaä starts up with the open project dialog instead of reopening the previously opened project(s). This is to avoid annoying crash loops.
  • noisicaä now runs ./waf build when the app is reloaded with F5. Of course this only works, if you built and run it from the sources. This is primarily to reduce the turnaround times when making changes to the code, i.e. it's only useful for developers.
  • The "AudioProc Dump" contains more information. Again only useful for developers.

Bug fixes

  • Playing the test sample from the settings dialog triggered an exception and did not properly cleanup some state in

MusE is a MIDI/Audio sequencer with recording and editing capabilities and aims to be a complete multitrack virtual studio

Updated: 27 Feb, 2020

Once more we've decided enough is enough, time to crank out a proper release, enter MusE 3.1!

As per usual, more years than we care to recount has passed since the last one. And, as per usual a lot of things has been brewing during this time.

Among the bigger features since 3.0 is the inclusion of a Plugin cache. This has two benefits, scanning of plugins are no longer done on a standard startup, making the startup a lot faster. Also the scanning is done in a separate process so no more crashes during startup due to issues with plugins.

Here is a short list of other prominent changes since 3.0:

  • Metronome improved, a lot of new settings
    • reawakened pre count!
    • Auto-connect metronome to first audio output track.
  • General plugins improvements
    • Effect rack extended to 8 plugins instead of 4
    • Generic plugin UI: Added 'Quirks' buttons to toolbar
  • LV2 plugins
    • Fix sequencing/syncing plugins (Helm, LV2 metronome, NoiseMak3r...)
    • Rewrite of state/worker support and more, fixes several synths:
    • Fix plugins using worker extension, such as *v1 suite (drumkv1 etc.)
    • Removed ALL internal LV2 support. Too hard to maintain.
    • Fixed LV2 X11 GUI size.
    • MidNam support
  • VST plugins
    • Fix # 708: Surge-vst

Updated: 22 Feb, 2020

Oops, already the next commit, though not a very big one (and I have to admit that I was already working on it when I wrote yesterday's update).

What's new

New toolbar

The toolbar has been redesigned. Instead of using the normal QToolBar widget, this is now using a custom layout. I rearranged the buttons, added buttons to move the playhead back and forward by a single beat, added a widget to display the current time (both in musical time and wall time), added a VU meter to display the master output level and move the engine load graph from the status bar at the bottom of the window into the toolbar.

VU Meter node

A simple node with just a VU meter display. I just needed the processor, which is invisibly added to the engine in order so send the master output level to the toolbar. Adding a UI to it and thus making it available to the user was simple enough.

Snap-to-grid when moving the playhead

Not much more to say about this.

Bug fixes

  • Some previous refactoring broke the status updates of the playback and loop buttons.
  • The time alignment of measured tracks (Beat and Score

Took a while, but I finally managed to kick myself back into a more productive mood. It was just a matter of getting started, but as usual that's the hardest part.

So here's the latest commit.

There were also some more commits to the master branch afterwards, but those were just maintenance work, i.e. upgrading the package dependencies, incl. mypy/pylint, which triggered some code cleanups. I just did not bother to create a new branch for that.

What's new

Sample track improvements

I made various improvements to the sample tracks (which I should really rename to "Audio Track") to make them at least somewhat usable - for my current purposes, which is to just import an existing song and then try to decompose it into its parts and rebuild those using noisicaä. I.e. I do not need anything fancy, just the ability to import an MP3 or FLAC file into a track and play it back. And do that without the UI blowing up.

Audio files are either read with libsndfile (like before) or piped through ffmpeg for formats like MP3 or AAC.

To get reasonably performant rendering, the audio data is split into chunks

CSOUND VERSION 6.14 RELEASE NOTES

A number of bug fixes and enhancements, but also potentially
significant changes are included.

For live coders the orchestra macros are now remembered between calls
to compilerstr. This should not change the behaviour of current valid
orchestras but could be useful in live coding.

MIDI devices now include mapping multiple devices to higher channels.
The details are in the manual MIDI section.

USER-LEVEL CHANGES

New opcodes

  • randc is like randi but uses a cubic interpolation.

  • mp3out is an experimental implementation of writing an mp3 file. It
may be replaced by the current work in libsndfile to deal with MPEG
    files. See appendix.

  • metro2 is like metro but with added controllable swing.

  • ftexists reports whether a numbered ftable exists.

  • schedulek is a k-time opcode just like schedule.

  • new array based channel opcodes: chngeti, chngetk, chngeta, chngets,
    chnseti, chnsetk, chnseta, chnsets.

  • lastcycle ientifies the last k-cycle of an instrument instance.

  • strstrip removeswhitespace from both ends of a string.

New Gen and Macros

Orchestra

  • The conditional expression syntax a?b:c incorrectly always
calculated b and c before selecting which to return. This could
give incorrect division by zero errors or cause unexpected multiple
    evaluations of opcodes

noisicaä is an open source DAW for GNU/Linux, inspired by modular synths.

Updated: 03 Jan, 2020

There hasn't been an update in a while. And there hasn't been a lot of work on noisicaä either.

I started a new sprint back in September, but then there was a vacation, and that yanked me out of my routine, and it took me an awful long time to find my way back.

It wasn't like I was not doing anything. I spent some time improving my emacs configuration, including setting up a configuration for my daughter's novel writing ambitions. We bought one of those all-in-one printer-scanner-fax1 things, which triggered me to write the beginnings of a little document management system, so we can eventually move to a (mostly) digital archival for documents that you're supposed to keep. I reinstalled my dying home server on a Raspberry Pi 4, which went surprisingly smooth.

But those were the kind of in-between projects that you do to distract yourself, not something to focus. But perhaps that is just what I need every once in a while, as I feel that I have rebuilt quite a bit of energy over the past few days. Now I "just" have to direct that energy towards noisicaä.

Anyway. Just to wrap up the stuff
