MusE 4.0pre1 release November 15, 2020
2020 is drawing to a close, the world is upside down, it is high time for a new MusE release to at least do our part in brightening the day. A very condensed list of other changes very loosely ordered:
- Lots of new icons
- More customizable colours
- Reworked mixer strips
- Menus rearranged to make more sense in new UI layout
- Added more shortcuts
- New: Add new toolbars to replace the separate transport window.
- Fix: Issues with saving window geometry/state.

OpenMPT is a popular tracker software for Windows
For more than a year, we have only brought you little bugfix updates to make OpenMPT 1.28 more stable and improve some details, while working on OpenMPT 1.29 at the same time. It took us way longer than expected, but now we are finally proud to release this new milestone, and it brings a great number of new features, improvements and bugfixes.
Here is a short summary of the most notable new features:
Breaking Changes:
- Support for Windows XP and Windows Vista has been dropped. Pre-SSE2 x86 CPUs are no longer supported. This includes Intel Pentium 3 and older, AMD Athlon XP and older and various other third-party CPUs.
- A portable installation of OpenMPT is now identified by the presence of a file called "OpenMPT.portable" rather than an entry in mptrack.ini. Existing portable installations are migrated accordingly.
- mptrack.exe was renamed to OpenMPT.exe. Please update any old custom shortcuts or file associations to point to the new executable. For existing installations, the installer will try to create a symbolic link to keep the old filename working.
General improvements include:
- While OpenMPT is still not DPI-aware by default, it now uses a new scaling mode for non-DPI-aware applications on Windows 10

OpenMPT is a popular tracker software for Windows
This is a small update to OpenMPT 1.29, improving existing features and fixing a number of bugs:
- Added new shortcuts for moving channels in the pattern tab (current selection if there is one, edit cursor otherwise).
- Disabling song looping didn't really work for anything but the first subsong in a seqeuence. Some related issues when song looping is disabled have also been fixed.
- If a match for Find & Replace is found in a pattern that is not part of the current sequence, the active sequence is automatically changed.
- More logical cue point moving when removing sample ranges.
- Respect instrument NNA settings when playing notes via MIDI.
- Improve some icons' visibility in high contrast / dark themes.
- Avoid desynchronization between channels when doing per-channel stream export for S3M files.
- Allow multiple sequences to be merged even if current song format is not MPTM.
- WOW: Fixed loading of several files and hardened WOW file detection.
- STM: Changed tempo computation to behave like Scream Tracker 2.3 instead of Scream Tracker 2.2, as the playback frequencies we use for sample playback are closer to those of Scream Tracker 2.3.
- MED: Fix possible hang during load if a MED file claims to contain

- Zoom buttons for spline (https://twitter.com/ossia_io/status/1317149631621570560) & nodal view
- Filter-like processes will now directly pop-up in a small nodal patch which makes more sense (https://twitter.com/ossia_io/status/1317151628512854016)
-> as such, the effect / synth chains have been removed as they became quite redundant - macOS version is now codesigned and notarized. Please tell us if you have any trouble running the latest release.
- When snapping to other scenario elements, a vertical dashed line will now be shown to make it evident that there is some snap occuring
- In nodal view the ports are now laid out vertically which makes more sense and allows for cleaner layout
- Faust synths now will only show relevant controls (not gain, freq, etc)
- A lot were reported by @jln- ; thanks to him !
- Bug fixes with faust synths
- Fix video playback using a ton of CPU for no good reason
- Fix that dropping a sound / video on a state did not create a new process afterwards
- Try to use sensible folders for load / save dialogs (#1078, thanks @fhars !)
- Fix midi learn which had been disabled by error - it's now possible to learn midi input again

OpenMPT is a popular tracker software for Windows
This is a small update to OpenMPT 1.29, improving existing features and fixing a number of bugs:
- In the tree view, natural sort order is now used for filenames (e.g. "Sample 10.flac" is sorted after "Sample 2.flac").
- Added possibility to use
%channel_name%in pattern accessibility description format, which contains the channel name in addition to its index. - The start and end point of an existing sample selection can now be modified by dragging them with the mouse.
- Playback position indication in the sample and instrument editor did not work when using a pattern-specific playback function (e.g. "play from current pattern") and the module was not playing before that.
- Slicing at cue points lost the first part of the sample if some cue point was 0.
- Trimming and resampling didn't adjust cue points accordingly.
- Sample frequency to transpose + finetune conversion was wrong if the resulting transpose value was negative.
- Support loading and saving (but not editing for now, apart from using the clipboard) command W, which is used e.g. by BASS for syncing purposes.
- PLM: Percentage offset (Mxx) was slightly off.
- Channel Manager is no longer redrawn on almost every unrelated UI update.

Ossia Score is a free, open-source, cross-platform intermedia sequencer
- JIT addon has been merged into mainline, this will need heavy testing on all platforms. :-) most things should be broken in that release though, it's mostly for testing the release process.
- To test: download the {platform}-sdk.zip file, extract it in the user library, subfolder SDK so that it looks like "Documents/ossia score library/SDK/usr/"

PraxisLIVE is a hybrid visual live programming IDE, rethinking general purpose and creative coding.
This is the first full release of PraxisCORE and PraxisLIVE v5.x. Windows and macOS bundles, as well as a zip bundle, are below. Linux users may try the new AppImage based packaging, which also includes an embedded JDK from AdoptOpenJDK, or use the zip bundle that uses the system installed JDK. To use the AppImage simply download, make it executable and run it.
v5 is a major rewrite of both the core runtime and the IDE. Much legacy and deprecated functionality has been removed. All of PraxisCORE has now been rewritten around the new base actor system introduced in parallel in 4.4.0. PraxisCORE is now built on top of the Java module system, rather than the Apache NetBeans platform (the PraxisLIVE IDE is still based on Apache NetBeans). The build for PraxisCORE has been moved to Maven, and individual modules will be deployed to central for re-use in other projects.
Both PraxisLIVE and PraxisCORE require at least Java 11 - an open-source Java 11 JDK from AdoptOpenJDK is included in the binary packages.
PraxisLIVE now supports running multiple projects at once. Distributed hub support has moved from the IDE into PraxisCORE, and is configured separately for each project. The default
Fully-featured audio plugin host, with support for many audio drivers, plugin and sound bank formats.
Special release to do final checks and tests before the final thing.

- Do not enable all 64 max buses for AU plugins
- Do not put plugin UIs "always on top" in Windows
- Fix macOS 10.12 build, so that it actually runs under 10.12
- Fix macOS README, mentioning new plugin situation (package vs actual files to manually copy)

OpenMPT is a popular tracker software for Windows
This is a small update to OpenMPT 1.29, improving existing features, fixing a number of bugs and adding support for a new sample file format:
- Added support for BRR (SNES Bit Rate Reduction) sample format import.
- In the tree view, hidden files are now shown if Windows Explorer is configured to do so. System files are now shown unless they are also hidden, as this is closer to Explorer's behaviour.
- Fixed some small visual issues when deleting a pattern or undoing the deletion of a pattern in the tree view and order list.
- Choosing Pattern Properties from the order list context menu always showed the properties of the currently edited pattern.
- It is now possible to redo the deletion of a pattern.
- MID: Support files with initial negative delta time. This is not valid according to the standard, but such files exist in the wild.
- PP20: The first few bytes of some files were not decompressed properly, making some files unplayable (depending on the original format).
- In file dialogs that can open multiple files, it is now possible to open files from different locations (e.g. through search results).
- Channel Manager: Middle-clicking a channel now shows the quick channel settings
Multi channel MIDI step sequencer LV2 plugin.
What's new:
- Autoplay parameters fixed
ProTracker 2 clone for Windows/macOS/Linux
- PAT2SMP now has higher quality sound. Especially noticable in LO mode
- PAT2SMP LO mode now uses 20864Hz (E-3 finetune 0) instead of 22168Hz (F-3 finetune +1) for slightly more room, and still has better quality than before because of the improvement above!
- The optional 2x downsample during sample load is now of better quality. Or it should be, at least...
- Fixed some bugs in the "sampling" screen (SAMPLER screen -> Sample)
- The sampling feature now takes up less CPU time while downsampling. Also fixed a small error in the sinc resampling interpolation
- Don't block GUI input and don't show red mouse pointer for a while every time you cancel a requester. No idea why PT did this in the first place, what a workflow limiter!
- Bugfix: Don't reset playback time counter on "play pattern"
- protracker.ini: "A500LOWPASSFILTER" has been replaced with "FILTERMODEL" (A1200 or A500). Removed NORMALIZESAMPLING and SAMPLELOWPASS (deprecated).
- Some other minor changes not worth of a mention
- Code cleanup

Mellite is an environment for creating experimental computer-based music and sound art
This release is provided with two types of binary downloads. The first is "plain" and does not include a Java Development Kit (JDK), so you need to have JDK 11 installed already:
mellite_{version}_all.zipis platform neutral. You will find shell scriptsmellite(for Linux and OS X) andmellite.bat(for Windows) in thebindirectory.
The second set of files include OpenJDK 11 (source: http://adoptopenjdk.net/):

You install it viasudo dpkg -i mellite-full_{version}_x64.deb. This is the preferred method on Debian and Ubuntu, since it will add an executablemelliteto your system and a desktop shortcut with icon. To uninstall, runsudo apt remove mellite.
For Raspberry Pi (arm architecture), use the plain download. On Raspbian Buster (full) you already have JDK 11 and SuperCollider server installed, and thus you are immediately ready to go. Otherwise you need apt packages openjdk-11-jdk and supercollider.

PraxisLIVE is a hybrid visual live programming IDE, rethinking general purpose and creative coding.
PraxisLIVE v4.4.0 primarily involves under-the-hood changes as we gear up towards PraxisLIVE v5. It also brings some helpful UI improvements and a major change in how containers work.
The bundled JDK in the default installers is still Java 8, although there is an experimental Windows installer with Java 11. There is no macOS bundle with JDK 11 yet due to Processing crashes found in testing. It is possible to use the Zip bundle with a JDK of choice for experimentation.
NB. Use of PraxisLIVE / praxislive without the space is now consistent, and reflected in installation folders and binary names. This should only affect you if you have custom shortcuts to the IDE.

OpenMPT is a popular tracker software for Windows
This is the first update to OpenMPT 1.29, addressing a number of new and old issues found in the previous release:
- Tempo tap usually broke and wrapped around to 32 BPM after several taps.
- Hide empty removable drives in the tree view.
- Offline / slow network shares could slow down filling of the drive list in the tree view, which could also dramatically affect OpenMPT startup time.
- Fix wrong VU meter color at end of OPL notes.
- Qxy now retriggers OPL notes if new compatibility flag is set.
- Bring back old OPL note end-of-envelope behaviour for files made with OpenMPT 1.28.
- IT global volume slides with both nibbles set preferred the "slide up" nibble over the "slide down" nibble in old OpenMPT versions, unlike other slides. Such old files are now imported correctly again.
- Fixed an edge case where, if the filter hit full cutoff / no resonance on the first tick of a row where a new delayed note would be triggered, the filter would be disabled even though it should stay active.
- Some sample loops in OXM files were not imported correctly.
- Out-of-range arpeggio clamping behaviour for XM files broke in OpenMPT 1.23.05.00. The arpeggios in Binary

PraxisLIVE is a hybrid visual live programming IDE, rethinking general purpose and creative coding.
This is the second beta release of PraxisCORE and PraxisLIVE v5. Windows and macOS bundles, as well as a zip bundle, are below. Linux users may try the new AppImage based packaging, which also includes an embedded JDK from AdoptOpenJDK, or use the zip bundle that uses the system installed JDK. Simply make the AppImage executable and run it.
v5 is a major rewrite of both the core runtime and the IDE.
PraxisLIVE nows supports running multiple projects at once. Distributed hub support has moved from the IDE into PraxisCORE, and is configured separately for each project. The default project configuration will run

Quite a few new opcodes are in this release as well as extensions of
existing opcodes. In particular there is the introduction of streamed
LPC which has long been requested.
Another feature if this release is a large number of internal fixes to
incorrect data access, as well as the usual tweaks and changes.
Starting from this release, no third-party graphic frontends are shipped
with the installation packages on MacOs and Windows. Users should
install their choice of frontend separately.
